Next we filled in resume templates and went out to get job applications we could study and fill in. I visited Hot Topic and met a very kind manager who filled me in. Next i did some research and filled in most of the application for review.
This week i learned a lot about disclosure and about getting job applications and resumes. I learned that when you are applying or interviewing for a job you should be aware of the disclosure laws. You also have the rights to say if you have a disability or not. We listed the pro's and con's.

Today at the mall, I went to Hot Topic for a job application and was surprised at the customer service. One of my classmates went there to get a job application herself and according to her, the manager was a warm and fun person to interact. I was quite curious about that place since I've been here one time and decided to go here. When I got here, the manager was pleasant to talk to and gave me the application. I think I might work here some time in the future.
This week i learned the following.
At Rise Electronics i learned how to pull a computer apart and remove the memory card. Then I blew dust out of old computer towers. Then I went to the Autism Society at the TMC childrens hospital and discussed how to make good shots when filming on camera. At the Co-op Kitchen down on 4th avenue I peeled carrots and packaged olives and rice snacks. I enjoyed the co-op the most this week (If i was at the hermitage it would of been the hermitage of course) because the experience is more hands on and the staff are all very friendly and interactive. I felt i was dilligent performing my given tasks and i worked the best of my ability. The thing i learned the most is that teamwork enhances the work experience and educates people as a group or community. Yesterday I managed to cut a lot of carrots at Co-Op in one day via a new method. Though it's not the first time I cut some carrots, I did learn some different cutting methods. The new cutting method took some time to get used to but I managed throughout the job. Once I finished, I emptied the whole section of uncut carrots due to cutting them. Despite the amount of time being passed, it felt like an accomplishment.
In Rise Electronics, I learned what a memory chip and hard drive looks like and how to take apart a computer. The memory chip can appear either in a green or blue color and has a wire like pattern while a hard drive is silver colored and has a sticker with the company name and description. To take apart a computer, flip the computer to the back and use a plus screwdriver to unscrew the lids. Lift the lids and take apart the memory chip and hard drive safely via the tabs. Once you remove those two items, put the lids back on and screw them with the same screwdriver. The thing I accomplished was being a pro at slicing and cutting beets at the Co-Op Food conspiracy and it was really exciting and fun because it was my first time doing it and I was just very proud of myself. The Co-Op Food Conspiracy is an amazing place because the people are just so nice and friendly and it is very easy to get to know one another and become the best of friends with each other. In the kitchen it is really nice and organized and it smells delicious every single time I walk into it. Also once you learn how to do the things in there, you learn and know how to do it really fast.
What I learned this week was that when you are working as a team it isn't just about you it's about you and your peers/team mates. Working as a team is a huge difference then just working by yourself because you can be done with it like in a nick of time. Also I learned if you put your mind to it you can accomplish anything. The things that I learned about all of the companies and businesses is that you always show good and responsible behavior and attitude. You should never come to work or a business tired or angry. When you are an employee make sure if the costumers are okay and if they need any help or assistance on anything at all. Having a good and responsible attitude means that people will appreciate you more and kids your age will look up to you. Also you will become a good and loyal leader to everybody who you love and care for and to the people and kids your age that are just inspired by what you do in life and that it is your purpose to change peoples life and make them greater than they have already been.
Number one rule of pretty much all the job you can think of, never under any circumstances be rude to any customer whatsoever even if its someone you hate really badly. Another number one rule is to go above and beyond every single time and no stalling or delays. If you are mad about something you have to ignore it as much as possible. If you are strong enough to face the person you don't like please have a talk with them to see if they have something wrong with them in there life and to see if there is a way to help them and cure them and maybe even become their friend because you changed them and helped fight their way to the top and not feel scared or nervous. I want to become a person that will help people overcome fears or tell them that they can achieve their goals if they just believe and put all of their heart into and a lot of confidence too. Out of all the places i visited, i love the Hermitage cat shelter the most. I have always wanted to work with animals and the community. The staff were very friendly and the place was amazingly cat appropriate. Everything met my standards like helping and saving animals and educating the public.
Working with animals keeps me in a positive mood and makes me more productive. I have the experience needed to work there and I know many things about cats and felines in general. I want to help care for and gain the cats trust so that i can teach cats and people to love and be happy. I want to help heal the cats from the past and have them adopted out to loving and caring homes. http://hermitagecatshelter.org A few days ago, I learned that certain appearances can have an effect on how the interviewer may view you and how they can affect your work. A good example of how appearance can affect you is if you wear tattoos on your skin. If the interviewer learns that you wear tattoos, your chance of getting a job would lower. Its possible to get around this by covering your tattoos with concealing clothing or applying skin makeup to pass for the job. However, there's a rare chance that the place you planned to work for would actually accept you despite wearing a tattoo on your skin. One of those places that accept people regardless of appearance is Co-Op. Co-Op is best known for their organic foods but when it comes to hiring, they accept a lot of people despite their appearance. Due to this, there are a lot of different people found at Co-Op.
This week was our first visits to our internship sites: Rise Electronics, Autism Society, Hermitage Cat Shelter, and Food Co-Op. Rise Electronics was tolerable, Autism Society was meh because it's just a tiny office located within the Children's Hospital at TMC. Plus, we're getting tedious tasks such as categorizing Legos and entering spreadsheets. They also want us to make a video for the Jewels & Jeans Gala on October 1, but I can't say I'm very experienced with video editing.
Hermitage Cat Shelter was amazing! I got to meet some really cute cats! Most are very sweet, some not so much (*cough* Claire). Everything about the environment was so perfect, I may even want to volunteer here in my own time! Food Co-Op seems really fun too! The staff there were hippies, which means they were aware of what they were putting in their bodies, and they were so chill and accepting of each other. Plus everything there is organic! I can't wait to start working in the kitchen when I get back from AZYLF in two weeks! |
