Job Fair

Job FairToday we went to the job fair this morning at Brookline College. We dressed professionally and we talked to different people from various Companies. I spoke to the lady from Sears. She told me about a job in Customer Service where you use a computer and help people on the phone. She said the computer part is pretty simple and they train you on what to say. I might like a job like that. We introduced ourselves by shaking hands, giving them eye contact, smiling, and standing up straight. Most people explained about their hiring process and what the job tasks look like. I asked what their favorite part of working for their Company is. I brought copies of my resume to give out as well. I enjoyed the Job Fair even though it was pretty crowded. I also got to see some people I knew at a different program. It was a great morning!

Mock InterviewsToday we did Mock Interviews. I have been practicing answering the questions by writing them out. Then I read them out loud and try to memorize my answer. It is helping me build confidence and not be so nervous. I am learning to use the STAR Method which is:
It takes practice to use a lot of description in your responses, but keep trying and you will do great! Keli'i Mock InterviewsThis week we are doing practice for Interviews called Mock Interviews. I am helping by being the Videographer. When we are finished we can watch the videos and see what we did well and what we need to work on. Aaron and Keli'i have great eye contact and awesome handshakes. These are very important parts of interviewing for a job. They are doing a great job. We are all feeling more confident the more we practice. We all need to remember to ask for a business card after the interview. This way we will have the contact information of the Interviewer so we can follow up with them later. I like doing the filming. I look forward to another day of interviews tomorrow!
Jasmine Bus Trip!Today we went on a bus trip to learn how to use the public bus. We went from Workability to the Ronstadt Center downtown. Our first stop was the Transportation Museum. They have interactive displays so we got to listen to stories, see model trains, and use a telegraph machine. They had lots of small items on display that were used on the old trains like sets of dishes, signs, and different items conductors were given for years of service. The train car cuff links were pretty cool. We got to go on the Locomotive and see where the conductor would drive the train. Then we went to Empire Pizza. Our server was super nice and friendly and even gave us a free slice of pizza and a cookie! Then we went to the Library area and rested for a bit. We were pretty tired by then so we went back to the Bus station to catch our ride back to Workability. We had a great time and riding the bus is pretty easy.
Aaron, Jasmine, and Keli'i THE GARDEN KITCHENToday we visited the Garden Kitchen. We looked at plants that were grown from seeds. We saw a lot of tomatoes, basil, and bush beans. We also saw different varieties of mint like Lemon, Chocolate, and Apple Sage. We got a sample to smell and our Instructor made a cup of tea with the leaves that were left over! We also saw Grape vines with tiny grapes growing on them. They have some fruit trees as well like Apple, Orange, Fig, and an ornamental pomegranate. One of the Volunteers took us around the garden and told us about the different plants and then offered us a plant to take home. I chose a tomato plant that my instructor will be growing for me. I’ll let you know if we get any tomatoes! Eating fresh vegetables from your own garden is very healthy!
Keli'i We visited The Garden Kitchen this week. We saw lots of different plants. We saw an Apple Tree that had a bunch of small apples on it. We walked around the Garden and saw how they plant vegetables with flowers to help them grow better. One of the Members is making a purple themed garden with purple potatoes, purple tomatoes, and purple bell peppers. That's my kind of garden!
Jasmine Nutrition and Healthy Food ChoicesThis week we learned about the importance of physical and mental health. We looked at the Garden Kitchen and Nutrition.org websites to learn about healthy food choices and how many servings of the food groups you should eat each day. We learned about some healthier options to fast food and how to make some of our favorite non healthy foods healthier. I like hamburgers and french fries. You can make this healthier by using ground beef and ground turkey mixed and cut up potatoes and bake them in the oven. Try to avoid eating a lot of sugary sweets like cake, pie, and cupcakes. Grab a piece of fruit it's sweet too!
Jasmine Criticism, Praise, and Feedback
Today we talked about Criticism, Praise, and Feedback. Constructive criticism also known as feedback lets a person know what they are doing well, what they need to improve on, and ends with something positive. Criticism just tells someone what they did wrong, makes them feel bad, and doesn't let them know what they are doing well. Praise is letting someone know what they are doing well and it makes them feel great. I have been practicing giving feedback so that when I get my job I will know what to do.
